3D license plates for cars: a fashionable souvenir, not a replacement for official signs

Lately in Ukraine, cars with 3D and 4D license plates have become increasingly common. They look modern, emphasize the individuality of the vehicle, and may even feature LED backlighting. However, it’s important to understand: these are not official state license plates but rather souvenir products.

Why have 3D plates become popular?

• They look stylish and original
• Available in different options — from metal to plastic, in retro style or “American format”
• The ability to create a personalized combination — a great gift or decorative accessory for a car
• Backlighting adds a “wow effect” at night rides or exhibitions

Essentially, it’s an accessory that has turned into a trend among motorists who want to stand out.

Can they be used on public roads? Here’s the police position

DSTU Standard 3650:2019 clearly requires that license plates be embossed from steel or aluminum. 3D plates, however, are created by attaching acrylic symbols — therefore, they do not meet the standard. Such plates are grounds for a fine.

Also, the Traffic Rules (clause 2.9 “v”) and the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offenses (part 6 of article 121) prohibit driving a car with plates that do not comply with the standards.

According to Ukrainian DSTU and traffic regulations, official license plates must be manufactured on specialized equipment from steel or aluminum and bear a factory stamp. Some 3D and 4D plates are made of acrylic and do not comply with these requirements.

The use of such plates while driving is considered a violation and may result in a fine.
